Week 2 Done April 14, 2007
Posted by Staci in : Running , add a commentI finished Week 2 Day 3 of the running program tonight. This would have been a great run if it was not for my knee. Never once did I want to stop because I was out of breath or tired. But my knee wanted me to stop. I pushed though it though and completed it. I know I need the next 2 rest days to let my knee recover. I am hoping that the 2 days will help and then when I start Week 3 on Monday I won’t have the ache I have had to work through this week. I hate the smell of Icy Hot by the way.

I used the Garmin Forerunner 305 today. I took it on a walk to the Gamestop near my work to get my nephew’s birthday present. It is awesome!!! I love it. I used the footpod while indoors on my treadmill for my run tonight. That was also very cool. I got accurate readings of my heart rate, and it did comfirm that my TM is estimating distance/steps/and pace correctly!!! I imported all the info in to the training software so I will have data to go back over and see how much I have improved as the weeks go by.

Posted by Staci in : General Ramblings, Running , add a commentIt was susposed to be my reward for finishing the C25K program, but there is a rebate out right now that might not be in effect when I finish, so I splurged with my bonus check. It came yesterday night via UPS. I set it up and put in a 1 mile walking course around my office building so I could play with it today. Well the best laid plans and all that. It is raining and we have wind gusts of 15-50 mph. The dust is really flying, so no walk for me. *sigh* I did calabrate the foot pod for use on the treadmill, so I can use that tomorrow on my run, but I really wanted to play with the gps settings.

Posted by Staci in : Running , add a commentSo I ran again today. I normally run at night after work because of my schedule, but I did not work today so I ran in the afternoon. I still used the TM though.
This felt great. My knee has been hurting since Monday’s run, but I took some advil an hour before and pushed through it. I had no thoughts of stopping, although each time I reached 60 sec of running, I keep thinking it was over. The podcast kept me on track though. I had a better distance and time because I increased the speed of my warm up and cool down walk and I also did the last 90 sec at 5mph instead of 4mph. I know that is still slow by most runners standards, but I am just starting out and I don’t want to injur myself or cause more discomfort in my bad knee. The more I run the better I will get, so I need to focus on that first and the time and distance will keep getting better as I go along.

Posted by Staci in : Running , 2commentsWell this was a bit rough. Increasing the running time each interval was difficult. Once again I wanted to quit halfway though, but I made myself finish the whole thing. I did have some knee pain, but that started earlier in the day so I made myself run anyway.

There is a 5k fun run coming up the end of May that I might do. I will only be in week 8 of the program, but it is not a competive run. Some people at work might go with me and join in. It is a good goal to have, and I know if I can’t run the whole thing yet, I won’t be the only one walking. It is designed to be a family event, so most of the people will be walking. And it is at night when it is cool outside so that is even better. I will have my gps by then, so I can play around with that too.

Posted by Staci in : Running , add a commentOk I finished Week One of the C25k Program. This run felt really good. I never had that “I want to quit” feeling. I acutally increased my pace in the last run just because I could. I am looking forward to starting Week Two of the program on Monday.

Well maybe I shouldn’t have… April 6, 2007
Posted by Staci in : Running , add a commentI re-did W2D2. I know today was susposed to be a rest day, but I was so disappointed in yesterdays run, that I had to run tonight to redeem myself. I slowed back down to my original comfortable running pace of 4mph and did the walking at 2-3 mph. I finished the whole thing with no problems. My legs are a bit sore because I did not take the rest day, but I feel much better about this whole running thing. My day 3 is susposed to be tomorrow with Sat and Sun being rest days. I might rest tomorrow and run on Sat and then have Sun for rest before I start W2 of the program on Monday night. I think that would be the smartest option to give me the rest that I did not take tonight. I don’t want to injure myself afterall.

Week 1 Day 2 and Walking April 4, 2007
Posted by Staci in : Running , add a commentSo I did day 2 of the program. I ran 1.5 miles with a 20 minute mile time. I increased my speed from day 1 on the running parts. This might have been a mistake. This one hurt. It was a huge struggle to make it through the whole thing, and I did walk through one of the running parts because I was short of breath. I increased the speed because I felt so great after day 1 and it seemed like maybe 4mph was a fast jog instead of a run for me, so I went to 5mph. I could still talk and carry on a conversation through most of the program, it was only a little past the halfway mark that I had to take an extra long breather. I still plan to do day 3 on Friday but I am debating on slowing back down to 4 or staying at 5 and trying to push though. If I stay on 5 and it is a struggle again, I might repeat week one. I don’t know yet. I have asked for some advice on the Cool Running Forums to help me figure out the best plan of action.
In addition to the C25K program I have also set a goal of walking 10k steps a day. Now 3-4k of those steps will be counted during the running every other day, but the rest will be daily activity. I know I won’t be up to the 10k right away because I sit more then I walk, but by gradually adding to it, I should hit it one day in the future. I just got the new pedometer tonight that will count both running and walking so tomorrow I will start using it. I will start keeping track from Mon-Sun the number of steps, then I will take a weekly average to see what I average each day. Each week I will post my total for the week and the average of steps during that 7 day period.

Cool Running April 3, 2007
Posted by Staci in : General Ramblings, Running , add a commentSo I realized I gained some weight back over vacation. Not much but enough to make me refocus on my health. I am on Weight Watchers again to drop the 10pounds, and I also started a running program.Â
The program is called “Couch to 5k” and is designed for people who have never ran before. You start off slow, and work up to a 5k over a 9 week period. But there is no real pressure. You can repeat a week of training if you need too. I started week one day one last night. I would have started last week but I need to go buy better running shoes. My first ran went well. It showed me how much I need to work out though. Halfway through the program, I wanted to quit, but I pushed myself to keep going and finish. I was proud of myself for completing the whole 30 minutes. I went 1.3 miles so my time is about a 23.5 minute mile. Horrible I know, but that run had scheduled walks in it to make it easier to complete the whole time. As you progress through the program the walks are lessened in time, and eventually dispappear all together. I plan on posting my running logs here as well as at the Cool Running website.Â
For more info on the program you can go to the Cool Running website.
